What is a confined space and why is it potentially hazardous?

WorkSafe New Zealand defines a confined space as:

  • An enclosed/partially enclosed space
  • An area that is not designed or unintended primarily for human occupancy
Possible confined space hazards include

  • lack of oxygen
  • airborne contaminants
  • toxic gases or chemicals in the air
  • volatile temperatures
  • flammable environment/explosive danger
  • engulfment/risk of becoming trapped
  • machinery hazards inside the confined space
  • loud noise
  • falls from working at heights
Confined space work needs to be undertaken by trained professionals using the right equipment and adhering to strict safety protocols.
